Introduction: Idiopathic scoliosis is a developmental disorder of children with an unknown cause. In clinical work with children with idiopathic scoliosis, we have observed a frequent occurrence of jaw malocclusion and anterior knee pain, which has been reported by other authors, as well as numerous congenital anatomical variations of the skeleton. We have hypothesized that one of the possible causes of idiopathic scoliosis is a disorder in the embryonic development of the skeletal system, which manifests itself after birth in addition to scoliosis and the aforementioned changes in the bones.
Objective: To assess the association of idiopathic scoliosis with jaw malocclusion, anterior knee pain, and anatomical variations of the skeletal system.
Methods: Clinical examination, questionnaire completion, and data analysis for two groups of subjects aged 11 to 17 years: group I - subjects with idiopathic scoliosis, 172 girls and 39 boys, group II - subjects without scoliosis, 165 girls and 40 boys.
Results: In children with idiopathic scoliosis, the incidence of jaw malocclusion, anterior knee pain, back pain, knee pain, shortening of the lower extremities, and absence of the developmental crawling phase is statistically significantly higher, and we also determined a higher incidence of hypoplastic XII ribs, cleft of the L5 and S1 vertebral arches, and lumbarization of the S1 vertebra.
Conclusions: The results of the study indicate the possibility of disorders in embryonic development of the skeletal system, which may result in the appearance of scoliosis along with several congenital changes in the skeletal system.
