Determinants of neonatal and functional status and physiotherapy intervention in children with cerebral palsy

Assessment of neonatal and functional status for planning physiotherapy intervention in children with cerebral palsy is the main topic of this paper. „Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe“ (SCPE) classification system and Gross Motors Function Classification System (GMFCS) are the key determinants in planning physiotherapy intervention. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the indicators of general neonatal status, functional status, and physiotherapy intervention in children with different types of cerebral palsy, and to identify the possible correlations of these variables. The study included 98 children (56 male and 42 female) with cerebral palsy, all users of physiotherapy at Special Hospital for Children with Developmental Disabilities. Study results confirmed the sensitivity of GMFCS and its rather good agreement with SCPE classification. Significant correlation of functional status with complexity and intensity of therapy intervention is also evident from the results. This study confirmed good organization and dosing of therapy programs for children with different levels of functioning within the GMFCS at Special Hospital for Children with Developmental Disabilities in Zagreb.
